5 Top Tips for a Truly Memorable Mother’s Day

Save the date

Whether you’re going to simply pop by with a present or make a whole day of it, don’t forget to let her know in advance – lots of Mums are super-busy, whilst some just like the anticipation! – it also makes sure she’s not out when you drop in with your gift!

It’s a wrap

Take care with the wrapping, don’t just bung it in a bag! There’s lots of eco friendly ways to do this that don’t cost much – for small items such as jewellery you can make a funky box by recycling a loo roll! You can even spray a little of her favourite fragrance – scents are so evocative and really add the personal touch.

Get your bake on!

Whether it be a cake, a brunch, or even a 3 course meal , make sure it looks and smells delicious and take extra care to make it looks extra special with napkins, flowers and gleaming glassware, the whole works! Take a look at Pinterest for some amazing ideas whether it be butterfly placeholders, cute carafes or photo place cards.

Up close and personal

Choose a gift that really suits her personal style – if she’s a fan of a crisp shirt, our square cufflinks would be perfect! Or is she a glamour puss who likes to dazzle with drop earrings? Either way we’ve got it sussed – (link to both items)

Just a Mum-ento

As you give her a goodbye hug, create a small distraction – then whilst she’s not looking pop a little momento of your day in her handbag or on her calendar. This could be a photo of you both, a simple post-it or even a lottery ticket reminding her she’s a mum in a million. She’ll love it!

5 Valentine’s Day Extra Special Tips

If you want to make your Valentine’s Day extra special, why not combine some old Valentine customs with your own ideas?

In the past lovers made their own unique cards with poems, sent pressed flowers or held a party for all their loved ones. It’s been celebrated as far back as the Roman era so there’s a lot of customs to choose from. In some countries it’s associated with the start of spring and celebrated as the day when plants and flowers take root and birds ‘marry’.

Here’s our own Dance Jewellery top 5 tips to help you make Valentine’s day extra special!

No 1: Earrings ‘planted’ in posy of flowers

No 2: A short poem or personal message alongside your gift

No 3: An invite to a party or event where they can wear a piece of jewellery you have given them will make it extra memorable!

No 4: With giving a pair of earrings, hide one of them and then provide them with a clue as to where it’s hidden

No 5: Cufflinks make an unusual Valentine’s present - but make sure she has the right shirt to wear them with too!

Happy Valentines!

Ho Ho Ho for Strictly’s Joe Mc Fadden

The Strictly Final had all the ingredients of a spectacular Christmas feast. Sensational costumes, consummate choreography and classic Broadway glamour.

Highlights were Alexandra’s Broadway showstopper, Debbie’s daring salsa and Jo’s cheeky Charleston, the 3 competitors battled it out and gave it everything they had.

However, Alexandra soon outshone her competitors with her sheer energy and total absorption as she carried off each dance with charisma, professional aplomb and as well as her dazzling outfits. Debbie was barely a diamanté spangle behind her - her high-energy salsa and amazing Argentine Tango both had jaw dropping moments while her controversial balletic show dance showcased her ability to show a more emotional and ethereal side.

Joe Mc Fadden danced skilfully with an effortless ease and charm but he didn’t have the kind of charismatic performance to make anyone remember any of his individual dances beyond the 12 days of Christmas. Not one of his 3 dances had the impact of say Jay’s and Aliona’s Pulp Fiction jive, Caroline and Pasha’s Istanbul-themed Charleston or Danny and Oti’s mesmerising Samba.

So it was a total shock (for Shirley Ballas as well, by the look of her face) that Joe carried off the glitterball with his partner Katya Jones! It was even more of a shock than when Aston got booted out in Week 7. But c’est la vie, it goes to show you never can tell. Someone can always unexpectedly fly away with the glitterball even when you have it in the bag. But Strictly fever will keep on burning, and Alexandra’s sure to have been snapped up in a Broadway show before you’ve taken down your decorations and hoovered up the last mince pie.

Mother’s Day Guide to Jewellery Buying

Mother’s Day gifts are all about making your Mum feel special and buying her something she will want to keep.

Jewellery is a great option for Mother’s Day, it’s personal, adaptable, postable and quality jewellery is long lasting too, so she can wear it for many Mother’s Days to come.

We can’t promise we can provide the perfect gift, but if you’ve opted to buy your much-loved Mum some jewellery, here our top tips to help you choose something that she’ll love.

Elegant or Extrovert?

Take a note of what your Mum’s currently wearing – does she opt for necklaces? Does she suit stud or drop earrings? Does she prefer classic jewellery or statement pieces? Taking note of her style before you buy will help you find something she’ll love to wear.

If she’s an extrovert who’s into statement jewellery she might like this piece – our BCharmed Cuff Bracelet, £19, will definitely turn heads.

Whilst big personalities can carry off shoulder grazing earrings and statement army candy, some Mums prefer to blend-in beautifully. If she’s the quieter type who believes in less is more, try opting for a subtler sparkle in the form of these beautiful Flower Studs in AB Crystal, £19.

Effortlessly Elegant

Is your Mum the type of person who’s always in a rush, or perhaps she struggles to wear jewellery with difficult fastenings? If you’ve ever heard her mention how hard it is to put on a bracelet, then this is the perfect gift for her. Magnet fastenings are so easy to put on, she’ll be able to get ready in no time, and it looks effortlessly elegant too Swarovski Crystal Ball Bracelet with Front Magnet Fastening, £27.

Time to Tone

What’s her skin tone? Does your Mum suit warm colours such as autumnal shades, fiery orange or deep plum? Then she’s more likely to look good in gold, copper or bronze jewellery. If she lilacs, cool blues and can carry off a mint green shade, then crystals with a silver backdrop are likely to really complement her style.

Ring the changes

Rings make a fantastic present but only if you get the right size. This beautiful ring is adjustable so you don’t need to worry.

Match made in heaven

What’s her personality type? Is she a free spirit who likes to mix and match or does she like everything to be co-ordinated? If she likes to co-ordinate this jewellery set would make a fantastic gift, Summer Flower Crystal Jewellery Set, £85.

World Book Day: Take a leaf out of JK’s book and master the art of dressing to impress!

JK Rowling always knows how to stay on the tasteful side of bling whether it’s attending the Brit Awards or the Premier of Fantastic Beasts. Drop earrings convey power, elegance and emphasise her great cheekbones - whether you go for shoulder grazing chandeliers or discreet ear-danglers it depends on your face shape and structure. JK’s are perfect for her longish face and fine bone structure.

Here’s how to emulate the world’s favourite authoress:

Shiny up do - ✔

Elegant clutch - ✔

Sparkly ear-candy - ✔

We think our fantastic clear crystal cone wrap earrings with a beautiful shimmer effect would be right up her Diagon Alley.

5 ways to impress this Valentine's Day

You may think that Valentine's Day is an over-priced, exploitative form of psychological torture but what if your loved one doesn't? What if she is really looking forward to it and marked it on the calendar with a big, red heart so you can't even pretend you've forgotten. Fear not, simply stick to our 5 simple Valentine's Day rules.

1. No gimmicks - Don't get blind-sided by crazy, 'edgy' products that you know in the cold-light of day will look tacky or you can't imagine her using/wearing in the long-run. Ask yourself will she still like it in year's time? This is a good way to judge if something is really 'her' or not.

2. No 'U for me' Don't buy something for her that's really for you, no matter how extravagant! This is a transparent and crass way to show that you really don't care about her feelings and could land you in relationship jail quicker than a Donald Trump meme going viral.

3. Get personal - If you buy a 'traditional' gift such as jewellery, underwear or flowers, make sure you add a personal twist - this won't even cost you anything - Wrap it in a handkerchief evoking her favourite scent, ensure it's her perfect size and/or favourite colour, attach a hand-written note with a compliment. Extra brownie points if it reminds her of your first date or a special moment :)

4. Element of surprise - the whole problem with Valentine's Day is the predictability and the boring cliches - no-one wants to be one of those couples in a restaurant who can't think of anything to say to each other. So don't be. Do something different - whether it's zip-lining, Go Ape, dancing or going ice-skating together make sure it's something memorable or impulsive which will make you look back and smile.

5. Anticipate to captivate - Some people love the anticipation of an event more than the actual event itself - if this is the case, why not post her clues in the run-up to the event, text emojis with a secret link or post cryptic Instagrams to really rev up the anticipation levels. Just make sure the actual present is worthy of all your efforts or it could back-fire!

5 reasons why dancing is good for you!

5 reasons why dancing is good for you

1. Dance away the blues

Not only is dancing good for you physically but it’s also a great mood booster too. So if you have the January blues, put on your dance shoes and simply dance them away.

2. You can burn more calories that jogging!

An aerobic dance sesh can burn upwards of 443 calories per hour. And yes, that booty shaking salsa class, jumping jive or quickstep Chasse-ing totally counts.

3. Fun and friendly

It’s a good way to make friends or meet a partner. Dancing is a very sociable past time and often groups develop a strong bond and stay friends for many years. In social dancing you meet a lot of people, it’s a bit like a speed dating with body language!

4. Brain boost

Too much TV can leave you feeling inactive and in a rut. Dancing beats rifling through Netflix to try and find the new series someone told you about but you can’t even remember the name of. It can also create new neural connections in your brain, helping to ward off the onset of dementia and improve your mobility and dexterity

5. Time to shine

You don’t have to dress up, but going to a social dance event is a great excuse to put your best dress, Swarovski clear crystal earrings or even a wow black crystal cuff bracelet to match your dazzling dancing shoes and take your moment in the spotlight. "Nobody puts Baby in a corner!"

Strictly Final 2016

The final was a spectacular with three great dances each from all remaining three contestants, Danny Mac, Ore Oduba and Louise Rednapp.

Ore was the first to dance with his singing in the rain which got him 39 points from the judges! Louise did her Flashdance with Bruno describing it as as scorching hot and saucy and a lot saucier and better giving a 80’s flashback danced with precision, clean and looking good. Danny and Oti where next with their quickstep. Having the pressure of the one to beat in this competition may have got to Danny as he made a small but noticeable error, which was picked up by the judges awarding him one of his lowest marks of 36!

Next came the Showdances, which literally showed off the dancers strengths. Ore’s dance was brilliant and was loved by all the judges giving him a 40 score. Bruno oozed praise, “It was a ballroom basics extravagancer. That mixed all the best of classic Hollywood – glitz, glamour, broadway panache. I’m totally razzle dazzled by it.”

Louise and Danny’s dances were fantastic too. But Danny’s was extremely brilliant with Len loving it for being full of dance with moments of magic. Darcy thought it was the perfect Argentinian Tango and Craig “totally brilliant”.

When Ore and Joanne Clifton dance their Jive you kind of knew that these were the guys to win. They were on fire. Even Craig commented that he ‘Can’t bear it, your so good, nothing to complain about.” Len said that Ore was what this show is about, with no dance background and gradually as the weeks go by you have grown to love dancing. Bruno stated that he was the “spirit of strictly!”

However Louise danced a perfect passadobla and also received 40 score. Danny’s last dance was their African inspired Samba which they executed perfectly.

The public voted on the night awarding Ore Oduba the sort after glitter ball trophy.

Strictly Musical Showtime - Judge Rinder Exit

The Saturday night before the semi's and there was 5 great dances. With judges wooing many of the dances. Judge Rinder did get quite a few comments on his flat footing in his Samba from the musical Jersey Boy.

Ore and Joanne danced the American Smooth from the musical Charlie and the chocolate factory. Bruno cited that never mind Willy Wonker more like Willy Wonder, with a stylish and great phrazing to the music.

Once again Danny Mac was top of the leader board with his absolutely fantastic Tango. Craig loved Danny's heel leads and that he lead the whole routine dynamically also commenting that he was now an incredible dancer.

Unfortunately, someone has to go and this week it was Judge Rinder. All the judges agreed with Ore and Joanne getting through on the better technical performance

Looking forward to this Semi Saturday!

Goodbye Ed.

Sunday saw the exit of Ed Balls and Katya Jones. Because of all the hype it was expected. How could the BBC let him stay in.

Online comments where mixed. There was trouble with online voting with many people not being able to get their vote in. And some saying that the BBC couldn't let Ed stay.

There were some comments that the whole thing was fixed and that the BBC are so politically correct that they we rigg it to get the result they want. It is a shame that the voting isn't transparent as this gives fuel to these arguments.

If there was some independent body that monitors these reality game shows so they are being honest. The truth will out but probably in 30 to 40 years time!

Some of the dancing this week was awesome and we loved Claudia's routine, totally amazing! Of course Ed did really well and kept in time and the foot work was all there! He has improved immensely and if there was a prize for the most improved we believe Ed should get it!

Not forgetting the 40 for Mr perfect, Danny Mac for their wonderfully unique African inspired zumba routine. The judges went crazy for them. It was a perfect 40 score for the second week running and a first for the zumba dance on Strictly.

Can wait for next week, nearly there, nearly Christmas.....

Blackpool Rocks for Ed Balls

After last nights Strictly show, Ed balls is still in the running despite being bottom of the leader board with a total of 23 from the Strictly judges.

There were many calls for Ed to bow down as political editor John Sergeant did in 2008 after being repeatly saved by the viewers. However Ed has said that he will not do this as;
“The public decide who becomes, President or Prime Minister, or who stays in Strictly.”

We have to say that Ed has not previously dance before Strictly unlike most of the competitors that are getting the top marks – Danny Mac for one and quite honestly it shows. If you have had dance training you are going to pick up the moves, posture, style and rhythm so much quicker than those who have never danced.

Ed’s improvement which is quite remarkable is because of his tenacity, dedication and hard work. The starting points are very different from Ed to Danny and it showed from the first week. So calling for Ed to quit is unfair and unsportsmanly. Katya and Ed’s routines are entertaining but also great dances. You have to start somewhere and why not start at 49 like Ed? It gives those who think they can’t belief that they can.

We are cheering Ed on!

See Ed Balls routine on Utube!

Saying that it was sad to see Greg leave Strictly last night as he had also been a great contestant who had also improved immensely but the voting public put him in the last two. Then the judges picked Claudia the gymnast over Greg.

Saturday's dances where all a very high standard with even Ed Balls getting OMG from cranky Craig. Darcy Bussell even went on to say that Ed Balls' dance without fail will go down in Strictly history. Even with the lowest score Ed was saved from the deadly dance off once again by the voting public. Their performance definitely one of the most entertaining of the night and probably this years Strictly. Dancing the Salsa to Gangnam Style in a cleverly choreographed routine most definitely won the audience that night with a deafening applause and standing ovation.

There were some fabulous performances with no exemption Danny Mac's Argentinian Tango which Bruno loved, Craig thought amazing but too aggressive for him but Len didn't and thought it was brilliant.

As Ed was saved there was a dance off from two good dancers. (Although Ed has improved you can't really call him a good dancer.) Daisy for the third time and Greg for the second found themselves in the dance off. Both danced better than before but Greg won 2 out of the 3 votes with Len casting the final deciding vote. Len said he had to go with his head not his heart and for the most polished and technical performance he plumed for Greg, who he said nailed it this time round.

The competitors' all danced extremely well with Louise Redknapp scoring 39 which included 3 10's from the judges. Ed and Katya scored their highest score with 27 for their Laurel and Hardy Quick Step which was even praised my the judges and Craig even said that Ed was improving! We are all looking forward to Ed's next dance to Gangstar! Danny came second helped by his first 10, this Saturday he has the to dance the Argentinian Tango.

Unfortunately, the dance off was between two great dancers Laura Whitmore and Ore. Both danced really well but Ore has been constantly very good and his dance off was no exception. Laura didn't get any votes from the judges and sadly left. With only 8 this Saturday the pressure is on!

Ed Balls and Katya Jones didn’t come last this week and neither did they get into the dance off. Their Halloween Cha Cha was very entertaining Ed being a mad scientist and Katya I think his resulting experiment! Ed kept in time with the music one of the positive comments from the judges. One thing you can say about Ed balls is that he gives it his all. His guilt on being on strictly didn’t really show in their dance!

Yet again Daisy Lowe and Anastasia were both in the dance off. Anastasia and Brendan were at the bottom of the leader board but Daisy had a great score of 33. So you could sense that everyone knew before they danced who would be leaving.

Anastasia has been a great contestant and a real sport. I loved their last dance; The jive to “Bat out of Hell” by Meatloaf. However the judges were critical of Anastasia’s flat footedness, kicks not being sharp enough, knees needed to be up more with Craig being the most critical.

For next week: How long can Ed last? This is the question.

After the ghastly exit of Lesley Joseph and Anton du Beke last week, Halloween Strictly should brighten up this coming weekend.

All the four judges unanimously voted against Lesley and Anton even though they danced extremely well. All week the Strictly twitter account was bombarded with unhappy comments many pointing to Ed Balls and that he should have exited the show but wasn't even in the dance off even though he has been constantly at the bottom of the leaderboard each week with this week being no exception with a low 16 score from the strictly judges.

This has calls that the show is a farce with the BBC only interested in the entertainment value and not on the actual talent. But that's not new is it?

Back to Ed Balls and his gallant attempt at the American Smooth. Bruno commented that Ed always takes you places you weren't excepting and this was not exception but he saw him "trying so very hard". Len ended with "Trouble with hitch-hiking is that you always get a doggy lift" referring to a lift where he almost dropped Katya Jones in their route.

Danny Mac has definitely has competition with Ore Odube who performed a fantastic 60's inspired jive resulting in 3 out of 4 judges giving a perfect 10. You guessed it Craig who gave a 9! So Ore and Joanne Clifton now have the highest score of this series of a near perfect 39!

Lesley Joseph and Anton were superb with Craig describing their Charlston as "shockingly good". Darcy loved the high kicks and Len stated that it was definitely their best dance. They achieved their highest score yet with 31.

Ed Balls and Katya Jones Paso doble to "holding out for a hero" was unkindly named "Slaying of the Paso doble" and it got a very low score of 16! But even that low score didn't get them in the dance-off! They must be doing something right!

Naga and Pasha were the first to know their dance off fate! Then Anastasia and Brendon again but I think her previous battle helped them as they were saved for another week. A goodbye to Naga and Pasha this week :-(

Shocks all round with Will Young leaving Strictly yesterday. The Strictly show tweeted "Will Young leaves Strictly" with a link to their website.

The article simply states that he left for personal reasons with a formal statement from the star.

It's a bit of a shocker as he did really well in his last "Bollywood" inspired Salsa route with a heft 31 from the judges.

The press has cited that it could have been the critical comments from Len on the lack of salsa moves but this has been denied by the Will Young camp with no ill feelings towards Len.

Many have spectated it might be well-being issues. Whatever the reason, all the best Will and thank you for being such a entertaining star!

There has to be a bottom two and the first to know their fate was Laura and Giovanni.

Craig complimented Laura that she was a wonderful dancer and he couldn't believe she was in the dance off.

Second to know was Tameka and Gorka.

How do you chose between them?

Maybe their routines were not as exciting as the others or their dancing not a crisp?

Both danced loads better than the previous night with crisper more defined moves. But it is the judges votes now that determined who stayed or went

Craig voted for Laura, Darcy Tameka, Bruno - Laura.... Len voted the casting vote to Laura stating it was the more polished performance. Goodbye Tameka.

Something to look forward to will be Danny Mac's quick step! How fast is he? - Good question!

Movie night on strictly was such a great night with fabulous routines and equally fabulous moves!

Everyone at Dance Jewellery loves Danny Mac but it's not just for his extraordinary talent for dancing!

Most of the routines where beautifully choreographed with Bugsy Malone Charleston from Claudia Flagapane and Ajay routine probably one of the best.

A speical mention should be given to Ed Balls and Kataya Jones "The Mask" Samba. Ed Balls was excellent green faced joker with all the Jim Carrey you could have cared for. As Ed said himself "We were SMOKING!" They certainly were. Craig but the dampers on it as usual claiming the routine was de-void of Samba with much protesting from the other judges with Len citing at least 3 moves.

However our voted is with Danny Mac this week! xxxx

Yes controversy ended the first competitive programme. Due to Strictly rules if one of the partners can't dance due to injury in the "Dance Off" then the couple with the least votes go home. So we wave goodbye to Melvin and Jeanette. Here's the snap shot was taken as they heard the news on live Sunday programme.

First to find out that they were in the bottom two was Anastasia and Brendan Cole. Due to Anastasia's injury they changed their route only hours before the Saturday's Strictly Show.

It was quite obvious that Anastasia concerns about having to do the route again were very founded. And so it was announced after Melvin and Jeanette had been selected as the other bottom pair that they were to go home.

As much as I liked Melvin's dances I will look forward to Anastasia's next saucy performance, hopefully injury free. Her Crystal studded hairpiece was lovely and we shall be taking note of the beautiful hairpieces and crystal earrings worn by the dancers, Darcy and the presenters, Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman. No doubt using Swarovski crystals for that extra sparkle under the dance floor.

We are looking forward to the stars routines as it's "Movie Week" with Judge Rinder jokingly dressing up as Fred Finstone and Claudia Fragapane's Charleston. Looking forward to it.

Tomorrow's Strictly is the first competitive night with one couple being knocked out. The line-up looked good last week but they had three weeks to prepare. So how will they fair this week?

Fifteen couples from the world of celebrity took their first steps with great gusto and energy. Every pair put their heart and sole into their performances.

Seeing gymnastic, Claudia Fragapane backflip in high heels was amazing: Making the impossible happen!

Other great performances were Anastacia and Brendon Cole's sexy Cha Cha with all the judges loving it espically Len who thought he saw the Rocky Mountains! Not sure Darcy knew where to put herself!

Judge Rinder and the Russian beauty Oksana were entertaining with Len stating Rinder as putting the "boy into flamboyant!"

With Daisy Lowe and Alaz in the lead with an amazing 32 after performing a dreamy Waltz to Nat King Cole's Forgettable in memory of her recently passed grandfather to Ed Balls and Katya Jones in last place with 21 - this ones going to be a close competition! Loving it - again.

Ten Top Tips for a Romantic Valentines Night!

Picture the depressingly familiar Valentine’s day scene; stuffy restaurant surrounded by other couples, eating from a ‘romantic’ yet totally homogeneous menu that isn’t as appetising as the slightly past their sell by date fish fingers, nestled in your freezer.

Yet Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be so stereotypical and unimaginative.

Take some time and effort to add some sparkle to your celebrations; With lashings of glamour, a sprinkle of humour and oodles of Baz Lurhman-esque OTT you can put excitement and fun back on the menu instead of imported molluscs and soggy fondant potatoes.

It doesn’t even have to be on 14th February – the surprise element of having Valentine’s Day a day early is an added bonus.

Our 10 fantabulous suggestions can give your Valentine’s Day some va va voom.

1.Go to a dance class together – Tango, swing or salsa the night away. An experience you can share, that’s tactile and means you can sling on a pair of bejewelled heels and a slinky or swishy skirt.

2. Why not considering dressing up at home and having the perfect night in with your partner? Have fun wearing your highest heels and creating the perfect chignon, knowing you won’t have to risk life and limb catching a taxi and ending up with hair a la Bridget Jones after you’ve crossed town in the aftermath of storm Imogen.

3. Dress up as your favourite glamorous couple (Brad/Ange, Daniel Craig/Eva Green, Beyonce/JayZ. Then live tweet/take selfies of your date night as you stay in character and see where the night takes you.

4. Throw a Great Gatsby party or just persuade everyone to wear Gatsby inspired clothes to your night out at your local and watch the drama unfold.

5. Take a chauffeur-driven ride round the city, dressed to the nines. Being driven round together gives you plenty of time to appreciate the effort you’ve made.

6. Spend a night-in getting creative together. Bring out the pottery-wheel a la Ghost, recreate the sketch pad scene in Titanic or give your bedroom a luxurious make-over.

7. Go for cocktails in an upmarket hotel bar, get a little tipsy and see where the night takes you - gatecrash a party, pole dance in the park or do something outlandish and a little flamboyant.

8. Climb a tower, book a capsule on the London eye, the Shard or climb to the top of your favourite hill. Just make sure you wear something distracting enough to make him forget about the view.

9. Attend a posh cinema screening. Whether it's Moet in Mayfair
– or Prosecco in Preston. It doesn’t really matter, just dress up to the nines, smuggle in some truffles and fizz, and watch something suitably decadent and make sure you’ve got the best seats at the back.

10. Lastly, just remember it’s the little details that make it a day to remember, not a meaningless grand gesture. Wear the necklace you wore on your first date, or the cufflinks she bought you with her first pay check, hold the door open for each other and be attentive (don't look at your phone unless you're taking a picture to remember the evening by).

To avoid a Valentine’s disaster just remember it’s the little details that make it a day to remember, not the meaningless grand gestures. Wear the necklace you wore on your first date, or the cufflinks she bought you with her first paycheck.

Strictly fans were Tres-Mis Last Week with Helen's Exit

<img src="https://www.dancejewellery.co.uk/media/wysiwyg/helen-george-exit.jpg" alt="" /

Strictly fans were tres-Mis last week as Helen left in a Strictly in a shock exit ahead of the semis.

Last Sunday's Night's Strictly dance-off came as a big shock when Helen George (Call the Midwife) left after a dance off against dynamic duo Georgia and Giovanni and the final will undoubtedly lose some of its sparkle without her.

Helen's unique blend of passion, talent and self-effacing charm will be hugely missed. Her Strictly highlights featured a flirtatious salsa dressed in a nurses uniform which revealed gazelle-like legs combined with tigress intent She shimmied, gyrated and sashayed with abandon and performed gasp-inducing splits bringing her formidable Latin abilities to the fore. Meanwhile the quickstep showcased her ballroom best, suiting her lightness of being, looking totally effortless and oozing Hollywood style.

Compare this with this week's opening and Katie's lacklustre Charleston and it seemed that Strictly was on the downslide to Drearyville. Especially when it materialised that poor Georgia had pharyngitis, concerning viewers that she too, might have a croaky performance. Anita's salsa had about as much authenticity as a packet of Doritos but was still oddly watchable and just as more-ish due to her fearlessly feisty attack. Despite Kelly's best efforts at the Rumba there was not a glint of romance or hint of seduction to fire the audience's applause and rouse them on their feet.

To use a Len-like analogy, Strictly this week was like mulled wine which had gone off the boil. But after some shenanigans with Claudia in a dolphin costume, the show started to heat up at long last. Georgia and Giovanni's waltz provided pure Madagascan Vanilla warmth, whilst Jay and Aliona added their own citrus twist; their Charleston was worthy of a it's own episode of Doctor Who - Jay owned it with such style and aplomb that the dazzling Aliona was reduced to the role of his 'companion'. It has the swivel and essence of a 1923 Charleston with a modern finesse of it's own.

As Claudia said, with a touch of Ginger from the back of the spice cupboard in the form of Kellie and Kevin, something magical really started to happen. Kelly Bright's American Smooth was warm and delicious; she appeared to take off on her Maribou feathers and fly around the floor, with her flirty sideways glances at Kevin finally infusing her performance with sugar and spice, without being saccharine.

So who will avoid 'extermination' this week? Only tonight will tell.

Strictly never fails to cheer us through the winter months with its gallons of fake tan imbuing our screens with a warming festive glow. The encrusted plumage of the contestants, encased in lycra and chiffon dusted in Swarovski’s finest, helps lift our sagging spirits and give us something to focus on beyond sludge coloured parkas and rocketing central heating bills which are our daily reality.

Even self-confessed tomboys such as Caroline Flack succumb completely to the Strictly sparklathon; happily encased in citrus rhinestones she swooped and swivelled her way through her final Charleston earlier this year and wowed us with her emotionally-wrought balletic showdance to Angels.

With the new contestants just announced, who do you think will be keeping us glued to our sets this year, (as firmly as the Swarovski crystals are welded to their outfits?). Which celebs will dazzle us with their dramatics a la Caroline and Pasha and infiltrate our living rooms with the infectious enthusiasm of ‘snake-hips’ Jake and Janette?

Will Helen George’s early ballet training give her the edge over uber-competitive Kirsty Galacher or will Jamelia’s dance moves gleaned from her pop-star dom help her to muscle her way onto the ballroom ahead of boxer Anthony Ogogo and six-pack toting singer Peter Andre.

We can’t wait to watch the dramas unfold and find out who’ll get a ten from Len or disgrace themselves by being a daaaaaancing disaaaaster.

The final of Strictly contained 3 worthy winners; Simon, Frankie and Caroline. They had all been through so much to get to the final and developed as dancers, there was barely a layer of fake tan between them.

Simon; the unnatural dancer who had made such amazing progress; Frankie with a style of natural grace and lightness; Caroline with raw passion and determination to succeed.

Frankie could have made it if she had done her wicked number and slightly upped the game on the show dance - Craig's horse comment was uncalled for but I get what he meant, they could have done something more spectacular than jumping around on benches.

Simon's tango was completely jaw dropping and showed a different side to not just him but Kristina. I’d previously thought that while a great dancer I didn’t like her personal style which was a bit too impersonal and slightly show-offy, however he brought out her more subtle side which I found interesting.

But in the end there could only be one winner and Caroline flapped, flipped and flung herself all the way to the end. Her beautiful and emotional balletic show dance was raw and emotional and as she flew into Pasha's arms as though pulled by an unseen force, she finally winged her way to victory; the Glitterball Trophy was hers!
